The 2016 FIA Formula One World Championship is a motor racing championship for Formula One cars, recognized by the governing body of international motorsport, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), as the highest class of competition for open-wheel racing cars. It is considered the 68th Formula One World Championship and the 70th season of Formula One motor racing. Teams and drivers competed for the World Constructors' and World Drivers' championships. This season marks the third season of the ShaneEyoho Universe, and the first official one under this branding.
The drivers' championship was won by Shane Wray in his first year for Red Bull Racing. Mercedes' Nico Rosberg finished second, while reigning champion Lewis Hamilton came in third. In the World Constructors' Championship, reigning champions Mercedes secured their third constructors' title at the 2016 Mexican Grand Prix. Ferrari finished second, while Red Bull Racing claimed third. This season also featured GP2 winner Josh Beardmore's promotion to McLaren, while Fernando Alonso took a leave from racing.

Calendar Changes[edit | edit source]
There were several revisions to the calendar from the previous season. The European Grand Prix returned to the calendar after a four-year absence. The race was moved from its previous home in Valencia to a brand-new street circuit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. It was the first Grand Prix held in Azerbaijan. The German Grand Prix also returned, taking place at the Hockenheimring. The event had been cancelled in 2015 when a venue could not be secured, having previously hosted the race in 2014 as part of an agreement to alternate between venues with the Nürburgring.
The Malaysian and Russian Grands Prix underwent date changes. The former was paired with the Japanese Grand Prix in October, reverting to the time of year it was held in 1999–2000, while the latter was moved from its October date to May, becoming the fourth round of the season.
Three races were contracted for 2016 but did not feature on the calendar. The Grand Prix of America was set to debut at the Port Imperial Street Circuit in New Jersey, in accordance with a fifteen-year contract. The race was originally scheduled to début in 2013 but has been delayed for four consecutive years. The Indian Grand Prix was removed from the calendar after the 2013 race due to a dispute over taxation. Despite several attempts to revive the race in 2014 and 2015, it was again left off the final calendar for the 2016 season. In 2006, Formula One Management signed a seven-year contract to run the Korean Grand Prix at the Korea International Circuit beginning in 2010; however, the event was discontinued in 2014 and omitted from the calendar for the third consecutive season in 2016.
