Bandicam 2020-03-26 17-05-23-455.jpg The 1971 Elite Racing League season was the 12th season of the FIA's Formula One motor racing support series (the series would remain a support series until 1997.) The Drivers Championship was won by future F1 legend Niki Lauda (who also debuted in Formula 1 this year so was given time in the ERL to build his craft.) Lauda was driving for BRM at the time. Lotus won the Constructors Championship for the third time following years of struggling at the back of the grid with money problems/reliability issues.

This season also kept the Constructors championship "trend" going as this was the 6th different constructor to win in 6 years, a trend set after the Ferrari stronghold of the mid 1960s.

Jack Brabham would retire at the end of this season with the future of the Brabham team unclear after this season.

Jo Bonnier left the series after this season to concentrate on his Formula 1 team project.

Formula 1 legend Niki Lauda would debut in the ERL this season and would stay there until his Formula 1 Ferrari debut in 1974.
