Bandicam 2018-06-10 14-46-12-655.jpg The 2017-18 FIA Elite Racing League season was the 7th season of FIA Elite Racing League motor racing. It featured the 7th FIA Elite Racing League Drivers and Teams Championship which began on 10 September 2017 in Australia and ended on 10 June 2018 in Abu Dhabi after nineteen races (the most in an ERL season.) The Drivers' Championship was won by Shane Wray who won with 271 points after finishing 2nd at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix then comes his brother Sam Wray in 2nd with 246 points (25 points behind) in his last season in the ERL. Whilst Shane's teammate Jeff Shreeves fought back to 3rd after having a bad start to the 2018 part of the season with 222 points (24 points behind Sam). Elsewhere in the Teams Championship, Red Bull-Renault (a combination of the old Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams, the Scuderia decided to fund for a new Toro Rosso team because of the merge.) secured the teams title at the Brazilian Grand Prix however when the chequered flag fell in Abu Dhabi they finished with 493 points. Whilst McLaren-Mercedes have secured 2nd with 440 points. Whilst Ferrari were victorious over their new factory team rivals Mercedes as they finished 3rd with 341 points, Mercedes finished 4th with 325 points (16 points behind Ferrari.)

New Regulations[edit | edit source]

This season is also known for being under new regulations. Instead of the Top 8 points scoring system, a new Top 10 points scoring system (The Modern FIA Scoring system) was introduced. The grid was also increased from 22 cars to 24 cars. Meaning 12 teams will be present on the grid. It also saw the first season of the free contract regulation in full effect (it was present in previous seasons but it was more strict) with drivers able to leave during the season (Brandon Ekins and Anthony Wessels) as long as they have a good enough reason for leaving the sport.

Testing New Tracks[edit | edit source]

This season featured a lot of new tracks to the Elite Racing League after the FIA decided to conduct an experiment to see which races they could potentially add when the new 2018 regulations come in, these regulations are similar to the real life F1 2018 regulations and are in interest of driver safety, next season will also feature some new tracks to the ERL calendar as well but this season featured the likes of: Valencia Street Circuit (hosting the seasons European Grand Prix instead of the usual Nurburgring.) the F1 fan favourite dubbed Spa Circuit by the community in Belgium, The Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore (which featured the 2012 layout of the race this season), the Korea International Circuit in South Korea and finally the FIA tested the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi to see if a finale race on such a grand scale would be good for the ERL as, compared to F1, its fan base is slightly smaller.

Next Season will feature more new tracks including: The Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan, The Red Bull Ring in Austria (to give the defending teams champions a home race), The Sochi Autodrom in Russia (which goes around the old Sochi Olympic Park) as well as the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico. Two races are also due to return being the French and United States Grand Prix respectively both being at new circuits. The French Grand Prix will be held at the Circuit Paul Ricard whilst the United States Grand Prix will be hosted at the widely popular Circuit of the Americas.
